Must Binge Netflix Originals

This is embarrassing, but basically my hobbies include going to Starbucks, drinking too much Diet Coke, and binging TV shows while eating Midnight Milky Ways after my kids go to bed. (Side note- Midnight Milky Ways are BOMB… you need to try them). I don’t discriminate between streaming services. I use them all (well, probably not ALL… but a lot); Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV, Disney+, Prime, and HBO Max. Wow, I’m reading it back and that is A LOT. I remember the days I barely knew how to work Netflix 😉

Anyway, I decided to start with the Netflix original shows I LOVE. I don’t want to overwhelm you guys here, so there might be some shows that I leave out. If I list every single Netflix original show that I love, we’ll be here for a LONG time and you’ll probably lose interest.

All of these shows are pretty popular, so this guide is probably meant for those of you who are new to Netflix/binging TV shows.

If you have not watched Bridgerton yet, you need to do so NOW! I can’t even explain how good it is. I started watching it because everyone kept talking about it on social media. Typically, I am not a fan of British accents, but this show was AMAZING! The only downfall is that there are only 8 episodes!! Produced by Shonda Rhimes (it’s a Shonda show, duh it is going to be good), Bridgerton is set in the early 1800’s and follows Daphne Bridgerton’s journey to finding a husband. The Bridgerton family and their friends experience their fair share of drama. And an anonymous source is spilling all of their secrets. There is so much more than that, but you guys just have to watch it for yourself. It is SO GOOD!! Probably my FAVORITE Netflix show out there!

Virgin River

I am OBSESSED with Virgin River! It has just the right amount of friendship, heartbreak, drama and small-town love. Melinda (Mel- from LA) is the new Nurse Practitioner in town, but Doc, Virgin River’s only doctor, isn’t exactly thrilled that she is there. Jack, the owner of the local bar, helps Mel figure out small town living, and how to deal with Doc. This show follows Jack and Mel’s present and past problems (they are juicy!). The chemistry between Jack and Mel is incredible. Did I mention Mel is played by Alexandra Breckenridge (from This is Us) and Jack is played by Martin Henderson (from Grey’s Anatomy)?! You do not want to miss this show!

If you haven’t watched this I would be surprised. All 4 of us have watched it and (most of us) love it. You follows the life of Joe Goldberg, a thirty something year old bookstore manager, that will do anything (and I mean, anything) to get closer to the woman that he loves. You is full of love, suspense, stalking, danger, and occasional death. Joe isn’t necessarily a “good guy” but, I always find myself rooting for him to find love in every season. I cannot wait for season 3 to come out!

Dead to Me

When the trailer came out for Dead to Me, I knew I had to see it. The death, suspense, and secrets weren’t the only parts of this show that drew me in. I simply couldn’t miss a show starring Christina Applegate. Dead to Me is a dark comedy about two women (Applegate & Cardellini) who meet at a grief/therapy group. Throughout the course of the show, the two women find they have much more in common than they thought. Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini have excellent on-screen chemistry, and their characters have the most interesting friendship/relationship of any TV show characters I’ve seen. Do yourself a favor and definitely check this one out! Rumors are that the final season will be out sometime this year!

Emily in Paris

I will admit, Emily in Paris was a transition show for me. I had just finished watching Jane the Virgin, and I wanted something light-hearted and short. Everyone was talking about how great this show was, so I gave it a try. Honestly, it was a little slow. I didn’t start really getting into it until probably the 3rd episode. But once I did, I was hooked! Each episode is only 30 minutes long and there are only 10 episodes- so it is a really fast watch. Emily in Paris follows Emily Cooper as she moves from Chicago, IL to Paris, France. Emily was hired at a marketing firm in Paris in order to offer an American perspective. A number of challenges arise when Emily arrives in Paris, and she must adapt quickly in order to make things work. This show is full of laughter (like really funny stuff!), love (like really steamy stuff), arrogance, and a lot of French accents.  Season 2 is in the works, and I cannot wait to see what is next for Emily!

Grace and Frankie

My dad and Adrienne told me I needed to watch this show. I was like eh okay, I’ll give it a try. It didn’t seem like “my” type of show. You guys, I was SO wrong! Grace and Frankie is the funniest love/friendship/family story out there! When rivals Grace (Jane Fonda) and Frankie (Lily Tomlin) find out their husbands (Martin Sheen & Sam Waterson) are in love with each other and leaving them, they must find a way to start over in their 70s. This cast is INCREDIBLE! You don’t want to miss this show!

Orange is the New Black

Most of you have probably already watched this one. If you haven’t, you definitely should! I will say, I had to get through the first few episodes in order to become really invested in the storyline. Give it some time! Even if it isn’t the type of show you would normally be in to, give it a chance! You’ll become invested in the storylines and the characters quickly! Piper Chapman’s past catches up with her, and her life suddenly turns upside down when she is sentenced 15 months in prison. There are seven seasons of this drama series. So, buckle up and get ready to spend A LOT of time in prison with Piper and her pals.

Sweet Magnolias

Sweet Magnolias was hard for me to get into. It felt so cheesy at first. Almost too Hallmark-y (is that a word?). Power through the first episode or so, and it gets better… I promise! Sweet Magnolias follows a group of lifelong friends Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) and Helen (Heather Headley), as they tackle relationships, family obstacles, and new job opportunities in the small Southern town of Serenity. Season 1 leaves a HUGE cliffhanger for viewers. Rumor has it, season 2 should be filming this summer. So, we should be back in Serenity sometime in 2021.

Atypical was another show my dad suggested. Most shows I watch by myself because they are “too dramatic” but even Graham liked this one! Atypical is about Sam a high school boy on the autism spectrum. Sam decides he is ready for love, meaning he needs to become more independent ASAP. This is a huge change for his family, especially his mom. Viewers learn a lot about autism and real-life family drama throughout the 30-minute episodes. The fourth and final season of Atypical is rumored to be out sometime this year!

13 Reasons Why

This is another show you’ve probably already watched. If not, I definitely suggest this one! Adrienne and Austin (our baby brother) suggested this one to me. Had they not suggested it, I probably would’ve never chosen to watch a show like 13 Reasons Why. While I like drama shows, I don’t exactly love the idea of watching a show based on suicide/death/dying. 13 Reasons why follows the story of Hannah Baker, a young teenager that took her own life. There are 13 reasons why she committed suicide … can you guess what they are? The drama and suspense of 13 Reasons Why will keep you on the edge of your seat for 4 seasons.
